    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use Frozen Salmon Fillets?

Yes, you can cook frozen salmon in the air fryer. A good tip is to rinse the frozen salmon fillets under some cold water to get rid of any frost or ice. Afterward, dab it dry with a paper towel and proceed with the recipe. I also add a couple more minutes to the cooking time for frozen fillets.

At What Temperature is Salmon Done?

Salmon is cooked when the internal temperature registers at 145˚F. Please get in the habit of using an Instant Read Thermometer – it’s a lifesaver AND, most importantly, a food-saver.

Should I Flip the Salmon Fillets?

You do not need to flip the salmon in the air fryer because the heat will circulate around the fillets. This is part of what makes air fryer cooking so easy!

What Size Air Fryer Should I Get?

If you’re wondering about the kind of Air Fryer to get, first consider how many people you usually cook for. I have this 5.8-quart Air Fryer, and it’s perfect for the 4 of us. If cooking for 2 to 3 people, get this 4.2-quart Air Fryer.

    Tips for Success

    • If you want a crispier salmon, you can always pop it under the oven broiler for a couple of minutes or until just browned and crispy on the edges. I find that the air fryer browns it perfectly for us.
    • Cut the salmon pieces into even sizes so that they cook evenly.
    • Don’t overcrowd your basket. With only two salmon fillets, you should easily be able to cook everything at once, but if you double this recipe, do not crowd the basket. You need hot air to circulate around the fillets to cook the salmon properly and get that crisp, gently browned exterior.
    • Doubling the recipe. If you want to double the recipe, cook in batches. I can fit three (4-ounce) fillets in my air fryer without overcrowding them and leaving enough space between each fillet.

    What Goes with Salmon?

There are so many delicious sides you can serve with salmon! Here are some of my favorite ideas:

    • Crunchy Kale Quinoa Salad – Tender quinoa and raw kale, tossed in a homemade vinaigrette along with apples, grapes, bell pepper, and sunflower seeds.
    • Lemon Parmesan Risotto – Creamy risotto made with shallots and garlic, and studded with fresh green asparagus.
    • Roasted Potatoes and Carrots – Caramelized veggies dressed with olive oil, black pepper, and garlic.
    • Grilled Cabbage Steaks – These smoky cabbage slices are incredibly crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside. So good!
    • Grilled Zucchini – Coated with a wonderful sesame-soy glaze, this simple squash recipe is perfect with salmon.

    How to Store Extras

    • Fridge: Store leftover fillets in an airtight container and refrigerate them for up to 3 days.
    • Freezer: To freeze, store cooled salmon in freezer bags or in an airtight container, and keep in the freezer for 2 to 3 months.

    Prep Time 5 minutes mins

    Cook Time 8 minutes mins

    Total Time 15 minutes mins

    Ingredients

    • 2 salmon fillets, fillets should be about 5 to 6 ounces each
    • tablespoons butter, melted
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
    • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
    • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh parsley
    • ½ teaspoon dried Italian Seasoning
    • salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste

    Instructions

    • Melt the butter and whisk in minced garlic, lemon juice, brown sugar, parsley, and Italian seasoning.

    • Brush the salmon fillets with the butter mixture and season them with salt and pepper.

    • Transfer the salmon fillets to the air fryer basket.

    • Set Air Fryer at 390˚F and cook salmon for 7 to 8 minutes, or to your desired doneness. Salmon is cooked when internal temperature registers at 145˚F.

    • Remove from the air fryer and serve.

    Notes

    • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. If you want to double the recipe, cook in batches. Only cook a few pieces in the air fryer at once; proper airflow is critical for optimal cooking and browning.
    • If you want a crispier salmon, you can briefly broil it in the oven, but I find that the air fryer does an excellent job at browning the fillets.
    • Ensure the salmon pieces are about the same in size for even cooking.
    • You can use frozen fillets but consider adding a couple of minutes to the cooking time.

    FAQs

How long do you keep salmon in the air fryer? ›

Place the fillets in the basket so that they are not touching. Cook the salmon in the air fryer for 6 to 11 minutes, depending upon their thickness and your model (fillets around 1 inch will need 8 to 9 minutes).

Does salmon need to be flipped in the air fryer? ›

Cook skin-side down: salmon does not need to be flipped in the air fryer. Therefore, make sure to cook it skin-side down. Drizzle with olive oil: one of our secrets to perfect salmon in the air fryer is drizzling it with olive oil before cooking. It will make the outside crispy and blackened-like, so don't skip it!

How do you cook salmon in an air fryer without it sticking? ›

    Brush with Oil

Salmon is a fatty fish (remember, those fats are good-for-you-fats!) and therefore doesn't need a lot of oil, but I do brush the salmon fillets lightly, and mostly on the skin side so that it doesn't stick to the surface of the air fryer basket.

What is the minimum time to cook salmon? ›

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Season salmon with salt and pepper. Place salmon, skin side down, on a non-stick baking sheet or in a non-stick pan with an oven-proof handle. Bake until salmon is cooked through, about 12 to 15 minutes.

What temperature should I set my air fryer for salmon? ›

Remove any bones from your salmon if necessary and let fish sit on the counter for an hour. Rub each fillet with olive oil and season with paprika, salt and pepper. Place fillets in the basket of the air fryer. Set air fryer at 390 degrees for 7 minutes for 1-1/2-inch fillets.

How do you know when salmon is done? ›

Internal temperature: Use an instant-read meat thermometer; the salmon should register 145°F (63°C) at its thickest part. Flakiness: When gently pressed with a fork, the fish should easily flake apart. Avoid overcooking, as it can dry out the salmon.

How do you know when salmon is done in air fryer? ›

You can totally cook frozen salmon in the air fryer if that's what you have on hand. For frozen salmon: Wrap the filets in foil and cook first at 400ºF for 7 minutes. After 7 minutes, unwrap the salmon and cook for another 6-11 minutes or until the salmon is crisped and the internal temperature is 145ºF.

Can you put aluminum foil in an air fryer? ›

Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.

What is the white stuff coming out of my salmon in the air fryer? ›

The white stuff on salmon is called albumin.

As the meat cooks, the coagulated albumin gets squeezed out and appears in the form of the weird, slimy, white substance that you are probably familiar with (and weirded out by).

What is the white stuff on air fry salmon? ›

Albumin is a liquid protein that solidifies when the fish is cooked, seeping out as the muscle fibers contract under heat, becoming thick and a bright white. Think of your salmon as a wet towel being rung out. The wringing is the heat and the water being pushed out is that white stuff you're seeing.

How do you clean an air fryer after cooking salmon? ›

To clean the inside of an air fryer, start by knocking any crumbs out and wiping up any visible oil. Then, gently wipe out the interior, including the coil, using a towel and warm water. Depending on the soil level, repeat this step with warm soapy water to dissolve any cooked-on grease.

What is the tastiest way to cook salmon? ›

Wrap your salmon in a parchment packet with aromatics, citrus, veggies, and a drizzle of olive oil. The steam trapped in the packet will infuse the fish with flavor and cook it gently, making it tender and juicy. Bonus: The parchment packets only take about 15 minutes at 425°F and the cleanup is minimal.

Is it better to bake salmon at 350 or 400? ›

What's the Best Temperature for Baking Salmon? If baking individual salmon fillet portions, a higher temperature of 400 to 425 degrees F is best.

What is the perfect temperature for salmon? ›

145°F is the temperature recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which sets the food safety regulations in the States.
