Where is the oldest Publix in Florida? ›

On Sept. 6, 1930, George Jenkins opened the first Publix location, known then as Publix Food Store, in Winter Haven, Florida. Today, that brick-and-mortar building is still standing, occupied by a restaurant called Tempo 1930. By 1935, Jenkins opened his second location on the opposite side of Winter Haven.

In an email to Coral Springs Talk, the supermarket chain confirmed they are reopening their Publix in Ramblewood Square, located at 1285 N. University Drive, on Thursday, Aug. 17. The location originally closed on May 7, 2022, to demolish, renovate, remodel, and rebuild the 33-year-old building.

The chain already has more than 1,300 stores across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Its new locations in Lexington will be among the farthest north — a location in Stafford, Virginia, currently holds that title.
